Degree Validity & Program Approval Advisory

Institutional recognition under the UGC Act legally empowers the university to confer degrees specified under Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956. However, institutional recognition alone does not automatically validate every offering: professional/technical degrees require mandatory approval from relevant statutory councils (AICTE, BCI, PCI, INC, NCTE), distance/online degrees require UGC-DEB entitlement, and state private universities cannot operate out-of-state study centers.

Crucial Checks Before Enrolling in Any Degree
  • •UGC Section 22 Nomenclature: Ensure the degree nomenclature (e.g. BA, B.Sc, B.Tech) is explicitly listed in the UGC Gazette of Specified Degrees. Self-styled or unlisted titles are invalid.
  • •Professional Council Approvals: Specialized degrees require respective statutory council approvals (AICTE for Technical/Engineering, NCTE for B.Ed, PCI for Pharmacy, INC for Nursing, BCI for Law).
  • •Delivery Mode (ODL/Online): Distance or online degrees must have program-wise entitlement from the UGC-DEB for that specific admission session. Professional degrees are strictly barred online.
  • •Territorial Jurisdiction: State private universities cannot operate off-campus or study centers outside their home state boundary (Supreme Court Prof. Yashpal ruling).
